The lady bug is a creature that we have held in high esteem for thousands of years. Virtually every culture across the globe has a rich history of folklore around these symbols of love, luck and happiness. In Switzerland, they passed on stories similar to our American Stork mythos that babies were brought by ladybugs. This may be part of why ladybug gifts for baby are such treasured gifts. According to some lady bugs are dedicated symbols of the Virgin Mary, and the Dutch word for the lady bug roughly translates to “Dear Lord’s Animal”. Other bits of folklore tie ladybugs to impending good fortune in the form of rich harvests, loving marriages, or that ladybugs with more than seven spots had the ability to grant wishes.
When our daughter was born we had an influx of lady bug themed gifts. She was warmly swaddled though those early times in a lovely ladybug swaddle blankie. As she’s grown that blankie was used as a receiving blankie, in her stroller, and now as she approaches little kid status she wraps her baby dolls in it. Her ladybug swaddler was an absolute blessing as a gift that she’s never grown tired of.
Since she has had that blankie around her since birth we have expanded upon the lady bug theme in other toys, decorations, and other little kid accessories. Those coins on the floor that all toddlers magically find go right into her little ceramic lady bug bank, named Lily. We saved the ladybug themed packaging for outside fun as it doubles as a little bug keeper. She loves to find bugs for her keeper (or sticks, or rocks...) with her little kid ladybug flashlight.
Even her lunch bag for her play dates with other kids is lady bug themed. With lovely lady bugs and sunflowers it is just as lovely as it is functional. We can keep a sippy, peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some fruit snacks cold all morning, and I have been utterly thrilled with how well it has stood up to the rough treatment that a toddler dishes out. Reusable, washable, and nifty handle that is easy for her to hold on to, this has been another gift that keeps on giving.
We were not planning on having this abundance of ladybug themed items for our little blessing, but since that first ladybug gift for baby blankie, she is lady bug crazy. I love finding little bits of lady bug folklore to share with her as she becomes a big kid, and take comfort in the beautiful and powerful symbolism behind these lovely creatures. If there is an incoming little angel in your life, I highly recommend seeking out a lovely ladybug themed gift.
